International Insights: Grubhub launches restaurant discovery through ChatGPT

US food delivery platform Grubhub has launched a new integration with ChatGPT, enabling diners to discover nearby restaurants and explore live menus through a conversational search.

Users can describe the type of food they are looking for, ask for meal ideas or search for a particular restaurant or dish. ChatGPT can then surface relevant Grubhub options based on real menus, availability and estimated delivery times.

Diners can browse restaurant menus and compare suitable options without leaving the conversation before being directed to Grubhub to complete their order.

Grubhub said the integration was designed to create a more conversational and personalised discovery experience, helping diners decide what to order more quickly.

For the restaurants available through its platform, the company believes the technology could provide an additional route to market by presenting their menus while potential customers are actively deciding what to eat.

“Connecting diners with relevant restaurant options in real time creates a more conversational, personalised experience—helping them make decisions faster while enabling our merchants to reach customers earlier and capture high-intent demand,” Grubhub said in a LinkedIn announcement.

Antonio Silveira, CTO of Grubhub parent company Wonder, described the launch as an example of the group’s ambition to build a wider platform for food.

He said the integration allowed Grubhub to meet diners “wherever they are deciding what to eat” and surface merchants’ products at the moment of intent.

The launch reflects a broader shift in restaurant discovery, as consumers increasingly use generative AI platforms to ask open-ended questions and receive personalised recommendations rather than searching through conventional lists and filters.

It also makes the accuracy and accessibility of restaurant menu information increasingly important. Operators will need to ensure that details including product names, descriptions, prices and availability are structured and kept up to date if they want their food to be surfaced effectively through AI-powered channels.

Grubhub’s network includes more than 415,000 restaurants, according to a recent announcement from the company. The ChatGPT integration is currently focused on the US market.
